Since the beginning of this blog, we have talked about sugar….

But it turns out that we have never actually have talked about the negative affects of sugar on your body. We partnered with the people at Retro Goblin to create this video to inform people about what sugar does on your body.

Oreo V.S Oreo Thins

Have you ever thought that Oreo Thins are just a marketing gimmick?

Well if you think that, you are correct.

One Oreo thin has 3 grams of sugar.  One Original Oreo has 3.3 grams of sugar. The result surprised us. We thought that the one Oreo Thin would have a lot less sugar than a regular Oreo. The difference is only 0.3 grams though.

Whipped Cream VS. Sugary Food

Have you ever chugged down a bottle of whipped cream?

Well, if you looked at “The Secret Behind Whipped Cream” whipped cream might not be good for you but, there is only 6.5 grams of sugar in a whole bottle of whipped cream. But do not chug down whipped cream on a  regular basis or you might have some problems….

At least you are notdownload having as much sugar as a box of Cocoa Krispies.  That has 25 grams of sugar.

Which cereal is the best for you?

If you are only supposed to eat 24 grams of sugar each day, is Apple Jacks, Cocoa Krispies, or Cinnamon Brown Sugar Crunch best for you?

Apple Jacks only has 15 grams of sugar, which is 9 grams less than what you are supposed to eat. Unfortunately, Cocoa has 25 grams of sugar, which is over the limit of sugar. Finally, the Cinnamon Brown cereal has a total of 16 grams of sugar.

It looks like Apple Jacks is the best, but Cinnamon Brown is very close behind the Apple Jacks. If you like Cocoa Krispies, think twice about buying this sugar killer.

Ghirardelli Chocolate Chips are Bittersweet?

copy-of-sugar-slide-basic

__________________________________________________________

Ghirardelli chocolate chips are mini and delicious. The whole bag can be gone in a minute with some of the chocoholics out there.

These mini chips might seem a little too sweet for you, considering the amount you can eat, but your mind will change when you find out the nutrition. That’s right! 115 chips only have 8 grams of sugar! Plus, there is about 7 one hundredths of sugar in each chip! Since when has chocolate become more healthy?

Have you ever been to a restaurant were they give you a cookie with your meals?

At some restaurants they have combo meal deals and some come with cookies. At subway they have cookies that you can chose to come with your meal, while you may not know that those cookies actually have 18 grams of sugar in one cookie. So, is your combo meal deal really a deal?

New Sugar Labels

Recently, the US Food and Drug Administration announced new label requirements for foods. The new rule requires companies to add the added sugars onto the food label.

Here is what the new label will look like.

New food labels

_____________________________________________

The food labels will highlight added sugars which is the biggest change. Before there was no difference in the label between natural and added sugars. This is going to show up many companies who are putting countless amounts of added sugar into their foods. This will help people make better choices on what they are eating by being able to see the different amounts of sugar in everyday foods.

Another change on the food labels is that companies are required to show proper serving size for humans. Having a serving size of four Doritos in a bag that someone is likely to eat from top to bottom is not helpful. Finally, the calorie counts will be in a larger, easier to spot number.

Food comapanies are 100% againts the new food labels. The food comapanies say that added sugars and natural sugars have the same impact on the body.  That is true but added  sugars is the fault of the company because they weren’t in the foods to begin with.

My opinion is that the new label might change the things that people eat. When you are at the store instead of throwing food in your shopping cart, you can look at the added sugars first. I know I will look at the added sugars before eating a food.

Matthew N.

My opinion is that the new label will be a great addition to help the world become a healthier place. I hope this will be used to its full potential in helping the world make better choices in their food.

Skittles Vs. M&Ms

skittles vs m&ms

______________________________________________________________

Starving for some M&Ms? Or do you want some Skittles instead?

What most people don’t know is that they shouldn’t eat either!  They are both very high in sugar. There are 22 grams of sugar in just 1 ounce of Skittles! 2 more grams of sugar, and your done for the entire day.

M&M’s have 18 grams of sugar per ounce. They do have less sugar than Skittles, but still have a lot. Eat both of those together, and you’ve gone 16 sugar grams beyond what you’re supposed to eat in day!

Dark Chocolate Vs Milk Chocolate

Milk Chocolate and Dark Chocolate

________________________________

There is reason why milk chocolate is so sweeeeeet, while dark chocolate is bitter.

Everyone knows that chocolate bars contain a lot of sugar. But have you figured out which chocolate―dark or milk―is better? Well, one ounce of milk chocolate contains 14.6g of sugar. The size of one ounce is even smaller than a regular milk chocolate bar!

For dark chocolate, one ounce contains 6.8g of sugar.

Still not a small amount, but surely better.

Is it Light or Heavy

Light Foods

___________________________________________

When you hear the prefix “light” what do you think:

a. not as heavy

b. better for you

c. a rip off by the marketing company to trick you into buying a product

Well, if you thought 1/3 fewer calories or 50% less fat or sodium you are correct! But companies can’t just remove the fats or lower the number of calories without making the flavor different.  So oftentimes, they may add extra calories, sugar, additives or chemicals to make the products taste just as good as the original.

That means there may be extra sugars in your foods.

I would say, stick with your regular foods but cut down on your serving sizes.
